Soul In Space: A Journey of Healing, Inclusion, and Empowerment

August 28, 2024

In a world where spaces for authentic expression and holistic healing are often hard to find, Soul In Space emerges as a beacon of hope and empowerment. Born out of a need for greater inclusivity and a deep desire to address systemic barriers, this vibrant platform is a testament to resilience and community spirit. In our interview with the visionary behind Soul In Space, we delve into the personal experiences and challenges that fueled this transformative project. From navigating profound family histories to leveraging social media for greater impact, discover how this space is redefining wellness and creativity while fostering a supportive environment for voices that matter.

Can you share a bit about your personal story and what led you to create Soul In Space?
The Soul In Space was created in response to not seeing people that looked like me or the people I love in spaces I’d venture in. Or if I did it was scarce and we clearly felt out of place. This space was a manifestation of something I needed and grew as I noticed the need was much bigger than me. Now I’m hoping this space offers a safe haven for those seeking to better their wellness, harness their creativity or educate themselves on a variety of topics.

What specific experiences or challenges in your life inspired you to start this project?

The Soul In Space was created during the time of the George Floyd murder so that definitely had a lot to do with it. However, the experiences of my mother and father truly pushed me to want to find ways to remove barriers, provide access and a safe space for people to heal freely. My family history is complicated, and rooted in trauma. I want to end it where I can.  I want us to dive into healing tools that were stripped from us. I want us to tell our stories.

And while my mom is no longer here and won’t be able to benefit from these things, I can see how much better my family has become. My father is pushing to become a better man, the rest of my family has grown (and myself as well). We prioritize our health, emotional development and encourage each other in our endeavors the best we can.

How has your community influenced the direction and mission of Soul In Space?
I’m very fortunate to be surrounded by other healers, educators and artists. So when any of us are stuck or need help with a project, we can talk each other through it and assure we stay aligned in our missions.

What are some of the key resources you aim to provide through Soul In Space?

Currently, I am revamping our yoga classes but there is an online magazine  that just released Issue 004. While I offer Reiki services, I plan to take yoga therapy clients and to hopefully release a yoga training program next year or two.

There’s so much I want to do with this space, and hope to team up with other healers, educators and creators to bring the best we can to our communities.

Can you describe a particularly impactful story from someone in your community that motivated you?

I’d actually prefer to hold off on answering this question for now, as it’s not my story to tell.

What were some of the initial struggles you faced when starting Soul In Space?

The initial struggle I had with Soul In Space was overload. I would take on everything because I wanted to put myself out there and I was so eager. I started to notice some things weren’t gaining as much attention as others.  It became known for the magazine more than anything, and the wellness/trauma informed services began falling in the background.

How did you overcome these challenges, and what kept you motivated?

Last year I finally hit burn out. I had to pull back so I could show up as my best. I had to revisit the Soul In Space, after taking a mild break from it. I committed myself to prioritizing my health and when I was ready started researching and doing some soul searching on where to go from here. I became more specific with my goals and intentions, and feel like now Soul In Space has an even stronger foundation,

With these revisions I’m hoping Soul In Space is recognized for its position in both the wellness and artist communities.

What advice would you give to other women looking to start their own business or project?

Have a plan but also be flexible. I learned that my brand has grown as I’ve grown, because when we know more or when we do better we can feed that knowledge into our personal projects. We don’t go into these things knowing everything, and that’s okay, but don’t think you are stuck to continuing your original plan/timeline.

The Soul In Space is different from what I originally thought it would be and honestly that has created more excitement for me, when I think of what’s to come.

How do you balance personal life and the demands of running Soul In Space?

Honestly, it’s really hard. The last year and a half has been particularly rough but I have taken the time I needed to get myself right to meet these demands. I often encourage everyone to have kindness for themselves, we are only humans and existing in this world is hard. That’s advice I also have to give myself, so I can relax or enjoy downtime without feeling guilty for not being productive.

What role has social media played in growing your project and connecting with your audience?

Social media is probably one of the most crucial players in the Soul In Space’s growth. Because of social media I was able to reach people I wouldn’t normally have access to. I’ve made friends, collaborators and community.

While I’m a huge fan of disconnected and participating in the real world, it’d be foolish of me to deny the amount of exposure social media has brought to not just the Soul In Space but to other movements and worldly events. For example, what’s gone on in Palestine and Hawaii. I have the opportunity to further push these things on my platform just like others have done – so that we can tell people what is going on and we can help anyway we can.

Can you share a memorable moment or achievement since starting Soul In Space?

It’s not a specific moment, but this goes hand in hand with the previous question. It really made me smile seeing that Soul In Space was being recognized by other platforms like Zine of the Week and Sequoia Ascension.

I still get excited when people repost content, tag Soul In Space or reach out about it.

It means the platform is in conversation, and that means the topics I hope to bring attention to are in conversation.

How do you ensure that the voices of your community are heard and represented in your work?

There is an online magazine that centers the voices of BIPOCs. I dedicate an entire month to only BIPOC creators before opening to everyone. I want us to be heard and I want us to have a space meant for our voices. Honestly, this project is the heart of the Soul In Space, and I hope to continue to develop it and to amplify the voices of creators, healers and leaders around the globe.

What future plans do you have for Soul In Space?

My two biggest projects are creating merchandise and a summit. But those are things that are coming in their own time

Currently, I’m in the process of wrapping up my 300hrs / Yoga Therapy certification. I’m hoping to offer courses to educate yoga teachers, and take on one on one clients for more personalized services. I’m a forever student, so anything I learn I try my best to push out to others that need it.

We are also preparing for Issue 005 submissions!

How can others get involved or support the mission of Soul In Space?
Right now the biggest ways you can support the growth of the Soul In Space by sharing the work of all the creators that we highlight or buying magazine merch – all available on our website. But keep an eye out for  upcoming classes!

What is the most important piece of advice you’ve received, and how has it impacted your journey?

That it’s okay to ask for help. That’s probably the one thing everyone has said to me one way or another.  I feel like that’s pretty self explanatory.
