Crafting Connections: An Interview with the Jennifer Flores Creative Force Behind Galaxy Pop Jewelry

March 11, 2024

Embarking on a creative journey often springs from a deeply personal place, where art becomes a vehicle for expressing resilience, identity, and connection. For Jennifer Flores, the founder of Galaxy Pop Jewelry, this journey began amidst the tumultuous backdrop of political unrest and natural disasters in Puerto Rico. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant culture and spirit of her homeland, she ventured into crafting unique pieces that not only adorned but also spoke volumes about resilience and hope. In this interview, we delve into her motivations, challenges, and the colorful tapestry of creativity that defines Galaxy Pop.

What inspired you to create a jewelry line specifically rooted in the vibrant culture of Puerto Rico?

I made my first Puerto Rico themed pieces in 2021, a time of political unrest. We had also experienced hurricanes and earthquakes in such a short span of time. I wanted to remind ourselves of the beauty and potential of our island, in spite of hardships.

I remember making resistance pieces with the words “Puerto Rico is not for sale” as a way to protest against gentrification. Those are very special to me.

What sets Galaxy Pop apart from other jewelry brands?

I aspire to create pieces not found at stores. Something I’ve discovered as a jewelry maker is that you can’t pinpoint a definitive style within my work. I won’t put my creativity in a box and it shows in my pieces. I’ll try any color, any theme, from floral to celestial. Whatever piques my interest, I’ll try my hand at it. Now, additional to jewelry, I’m creating home décor pieces, allowing me to experiment with 3D shapes.

Could you share some of the challenges you’ve faced while building Galaxy Pop and how you’ve overcome them?

Building a business is a learning process. I made plenty of mistakes at the beginning. I had to experiment with polymer clay brands before finding the right type. I had pieces get broken, discolored. Technique research and material testing are key to succeeding, no matter how frustrating and time consuming.

How do you source materials for your jewelry, and do you prioritize sustainability and ethical practices in your production process?

I make it a priority to purchase my materials from local, female-owned jewelry supplies stores.

What has been the most rewarding moment or experience since starting Galaxy Pop?

Seeing my pieces in brick and mortar local stores, sharing a space with fellow female makers who I admire, has been a source of pride for me as an entrepreneur.

How do you stay inspired and creative when designing new pieces for your collection?

I’m inspired by other types of art – painting, sculpting, music. Also, I look for trends and put my twist to them.

Can you discuss a specific piece from your collection that holds special significance to you, and why?

Knowing that my Puerto Rico necklaces are hanging from necks all around the world is something that I hold very close to my heart. Millions of Puerto Ricans have had to move to the States to seek better opportunities. They miss their hometowns, their language and traditions. It is incredibly rewarding to me to know that my people keep a connection to our island through my jewelry.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to start their own creative business or project?

Entrepreneurship is like riding a wave. Not everyday will be a success. And not everyday will be a failure. Don’t fall into the comparison game; know your art is needed and has value, even when it’s not selling.

How do you balance running Galaxy Pop with other aspects of your life, such as family or personal time?

Sometimes, when you work from home, the lines get blurred. You have art to make, but also household chores to complete. It is crucial to stick to a schedule that works for me.

I have an 8 year old son, and he knows a lot about my business. This helps him understand any unexpected changes in routine, for example. I work while he’s at school. By the time he’s back, I put on my mom hat!

I’ve gone through episodes of burnout. If my mind requires down time, I take a break from creating for as long as I need.

I’ve been blessed with an incredibly supportive family.

As a business owner based in Puerto Rico, have you encountered any unique opportunities or challenges that have influenced the direction of Galaxy Pop?

A challenge I’ve encountered is that not all people understand the differences between a handmade product and a mass-produced one. This has been an opportunity to educate my audience about the uniqueness of a handmade piece – how valuable and one of a kind it is. Why we price our products the way we do. And how important small businesses are to keep our struggling economy afloat.

Where do you envision Galaxy Pop in the next few years, and what are your goals for the future of the brand?

I want my brand to reach a broader audience. I want to experiment with new materials and expand my home décor line.

Finally, how can people support Galaxy Pop and stay updated on your latest creations and events?
