Can you share a bit about your personal journey and how it influenced your book “Postcards from the Desert”?

As the child of immigrant parents, I took on many adult responsibilities and met high expectations while growing up. Children of immigrants often bear the weight of high expectations, which can lead to the unlearning of harmful cultural norms. My teenage years were marked by a battle with clinical depression and a harrowing suicide attempt. These experiences have fueled my passion for dismantling mental health stigmas within my community. I believe in the healing power of writing, and therapy, and strive to inspire others to embark on their own journeys of healing and self-discovery. “Postcards from the Desert” is the story of my journey from adolescence to adulthood. It is a love letter to my younger self.

Were there any specific struggles or challenges you faced while self-publishing your book or starting your business?

The biggest struggle was dealing with imposter syndrome and ignoring the fear-based thoughts that arise when publishing vulnerable art. Sometimes I feel as if I’m not a legitimate writer because I lack an MFA. Many of my peers have extensive experience in the writing industry, while I am relatively new to the arts and writing space. My book, “Postcards from the Desert” contains vulnerable poetry and personal essays that challenged me to overcome my fear of being vulnerable and the fear of being seen. Also, being a full-time writer means embracing the entrepreneurial side, which involves self-promotion and staying creative while ensuring financial stability. However, the more I share my journey and consistently show up as a writer, the more I am able to alleviate those fears. My advice is to not let fear hinder your creativity or your ability to promote your work.

How do you believe writing can be a tool for healing and connection?

Writing allows individuals to express emotions that might be difficult to express verbally. It is a practice that allows each person to process what they are thinking and feeling. This practice of self-reflection can foster greater self-awareness and understanding and thus allowing for a sense of community and a deeper connection with others.

What do you hope readers will take away from your book?

I hope they feel seen. Sometimes when we are in the midst of a difficult chapter in our lives, it is easy to think we are the only ones struggling but that’s rarely the case. I also hope it encourages readers to consider writing and sharing their stories. We all have a story to tell!
