How did you initially feel when faced with the need to start your life over?
Initially, I was overwhelmed with fear and anxiety. I had a plan on how I wanted my life to be. College degree, Marriage, Successful Career, and Family by 31 (in that order) …and run off to the sunset. The result is: only one thing happened. I was sinking into a deep depression and identity issues because I couldn’t control my life action plan. My mind had a tough time processing these facts; however, I knew I couldn’t stay in that low state.
What specific challenges did you encounter during this journey of rewriting your story?
The recurring challenge is my family’s support and critical (sometimes, unnecessary) comments about my choices in life. Some say my expectations were too high and I needed to settle for the average ‘better’ options from relationships to career. Then, I started to beat myself up mentally through comparisons of my friends and people on social media on how my life should be and what my success story should look like.
How did you cope with feelings of disappointment and potential identity crisis?
I had to do a deep self-reflection round of questions on who I am: Who is Shellsy?
What do I like about her, what don’t I like about her? What do I hate about me? This was my way of purging and being completely honest with myself. I felt that this was the best way to start on step 1 again because I cheated myself on learning about me and replaced it with society’s standard on what’s best for me.
What advice would you give to someone who feels stuck in their current life path and is hesitant to make a change?
The best advice that I would give to someone that feels stuck and hesitant…take a step back to a quiet step away from the chaos/distraction and breath. Life happens in unexpected ways; it’s how we maneuver through it that makes us stronger. Forgive yourself, forgive yourself.
Then, dust your shoulders off, switch things up, and try again.
Looking back, what would you say to your past self at the beginning of this journey?
Trust your instincts more and have power behind your voice.
You are stronger than what you think you know.
