Finding Freedom Through Words: An Interview on Healing, Courage, and Resilience with Annapolis Shaw Author of 'To Live'

March 7, 2024

Meet Annapolis E. Shaw, a courageous author who turned her painful past into the powerful book, "To Live." In this interview, she opens up about facing her childhood traumas, finding strength in vulnerability, and healing through writing and faith. Annapolis' journey offers hope and inspiration to anyone struggling with their own challenges, showing that resilience and determination can lead to profound healing and growth.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced while writing and sharing your story?

My biggest challenge in creating this story was allowing myself to talk about the traumas of my childhood. It was also a challenge for me to overcome my fear of others' opinions, whether it was their opinions of my writing style, format, or the mention of them in my book.

How did you find the courage to confront and address the traumas from your childhood in your book?

Upon meeting and marrying my husband, I separated from my family. In order to protect my mental health, I made this decision. It was after my separation that I started my healing journey; I found God, peace, and true happiness. In this process, I came to understand that to truly heal, I must face my trauma head-on. Through poetry and publication, I decided to give these traumas to the world, so they are no longer festering inside me.

What impact do you hope "To Live" will have on readers who may have experienced similar challenges?

As a trauma survivor myself, I wish that "To Live" will inspire other survivors not to remain silent. I want others to know that we can find peace through simple things like art and poetry.

In what ways has sharing your story helped you in your own healing process?

Sharing my story has completely transformed my reality. I have never felt so free from my pain. "To Live" allowed me to finally dispel my trauma outside of myself. I no longer even think about my previous hardships.

Can you talk about a particular moment or experience during your journey that stands out as particularly transformative or inspiring?

The poem "Brother's Mobile" involved me researching the mobile in order to gain a clear understanding of its appearance and sound. The song of the mobile played and I remember crying a cry that seemed to have gnawed at my soul for a long time. This moment made all the pain I had experienced during the writing of this book disappear.

What advice would you give to others who are struggling to confront and overcome their own traumas or challenges?

Keep living. One day, you will see the light at the end of the tunnel. If you continue to prosper and aspire to break these generational curses, I promise, one day, it will happen. Keep living.

How do you maintain a sense of resilience and positivity in the face of adversity?

Honestly, I would say determination. It is through determination that I am able to say continuously that I will make it through. I am going to survive. In my mind, there is no room for doubt.

Are there any specific resources, practices, or techniques that have been particularly helpful to you on your healing journey?

My relationship with God has been a large part of my healing journey. In times of weakness, my unshaken father-daughter relationship with Him has given me strength.

Looking back, what do you feel most proud of in regard to your work on "To Live"?

I am most proud that I was able to create this book at all. Being able to immortalize my story and myself is something I am very proud of.
