From Teacher to Web Design Entrepreneur: Anita Martin’s Journey of Creativity and Growth

What inspired you to start Anita Web Designer, and how did you identify the need for your services in the market?

I started Anita Web Designer after completing a course in web design and development. As part of the course I created a website for a hair salon here in Melbourne and I immediately fell in love with the process. I learned how to use WordPress, how to code, how to add functionality and self-host websites instead of paying subscriptions to the platform itself. I realised that my skills could help business owners to build websites that can grow their business through custom design and enhanced client experience. WordPress allows you to scale your website as your business grows so I knew it was the perfect solution for business owners who wish to start their website from where their business is at right now but want to build on as it blossoms.

Can you share a bit about your personal journey and how it led you to become a web designer?

I qualified as a teacher in 2014, a job that allowed me to travel and work in countries like India, the United Arab Emirates and Australia (where I now live). I enjoyed serving others but found that I craved a creative outlet. It was in 2021 that I completed a course in WordPress website design and development and I was hooked! Not only would building websites serve as the creative outlet I was searching for, it would also allow for more flexibility in where I could work from - making trips to Ireland to see friends and family much more possible.

What are some of the key moments or experiences that have shaped your business so far?

Redesigning my own website, getting professional photos done and undertaking a brand voice course has transformed by brand and how others perceive it. I have felt a huge shift since investing in myself and my business. My dream clients are starting to show up and projects I could have only dreamed of are starting to come my way!

What specific challenges did you face when starting your business, and how did you overcome them?

In the beginning I had a lot to learn about setting each project up for success through setting out clear timelines, deadlines and expectations with clients. Through lived experience of its importance, I now set each project up with a Notion Workspace. This acts like a hub for the entire project duration, allowing the client and I to clearly access important documents, and manage timelines and deadlines - all in one place.

How has working from home impacted your mental health, and what strategies have you found helpful in managing this?

I have found working from home quite enjoyable! Prevention is the best cure so I didn't let myself get to the point of isolation. I joined a networking group here in Melbourne, The Social Day Club. We have meetups every couple of weeks and I swear, they are more like friends at this point. I also ensure I meditate each morning, practise some mindfulness and get out for a walk. I take a break in the middle of the day and go to the gym and do another block of work after. I also try to schedule some coffee dates with friends throughout the week on days that I don't go to the gym so I can charge up my social battery and get out of the house.

Can you describe a particularly difficult period in your business and how you navigated through it?

There was a quiet period earlier this year (which I believe a lot of people experienced). I decided to use it as an opportunity to work on my business and ensure that my systems were up to date, my website reflected where AWD is currently at and that my branding was clear.

How do you maintain a work-life balance while running a business from home?

While I do work some weekends, I often try to take at least one day fully off of work each week. On this day, I don't allow myself to even look at my office or I know I will be sitting at the desk, doing "just one little thing" and end up spending 3 hours absorbed by work!

What advice would you give to other women who are considering starting their own business or freelance career?

I would say go for it! Don't compare yourself and feel intimidated by people on Instagram who look like they are a million miles ahead of you, because a) it's Instagram - dial what you see down by around 60% and b) they also had to start somewhere! I would also say, you don't have to quit your current job to start your own business. You could try going casual or part-time at first before you take the leap. That way, you can build your business sustainably and not put a whole load of pressure and stress on it from the outset.

What are some of the most rewarding aspects of your work, both personally and professionally?

When I hand over a website and a client absolutely loves it! Also when websites generate leads and conversions for my clients. It's the most rewarding part of the job for sure.

How do you manage to keep up with the constantly evolving trends in web design and technology?

I follow ALL of the newsletters. However, web design trends are fickle so I tend to take what feels right for my clients and their brand.

What impact do you hope to have on your clients through your work?

My aim is to inspire my clients to have vision for their business. I want to give them the confidence of knowing that their business will grow and that they will need a WordPress website that can scale with them, offering endless functionality and opening up multiple income streams through shops, courses and memberships!
