Her journey from managing a cybersecurity firm in the UK to embracing the nomadic lifestyle is a testament to the power of resilience and adaptability. In this interview, Ivy shares her transformative experiences and offers valuable insights for anyone looking to blend their professional aspirations with a life of exploration and creativity.

What inspired you to start The Creative Nomad PH, and how did your experiences as a digital nomad influence this decision?

The Creative Nomad PH was born out of my desire to empower individuals who feel less creative or tech-savvy to navigate the digital world confidently. As a digital nomad, I’ve experienced firsthand the challenges and opportunities that come with remote work and freelancing. My travels and encounters with different cultures made me realize that creativity and digital skills are universal keys to success, no matter where you are. This realization inspired me to create a platform that bridges the gap for those who aspire to thrive in the digital landscape.

Can you share your journey from managing a cybersecurity firm in the UK to becoming a digital nomad and freelancer?

My journey began during my remote work at a firm in the UK as I was working as a Sales & Marketing Manager, tho the work was fulfilling, I also went on handling other clients outside of that like Upwork and Referrals, I felt a growing urge to explore the world and embrace a more flexible lifestyle. The transition wasn’t easy, but my background in cybersecurity equipped me with problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of the digital world, which became invaluable as I pursue my journey as a freelancer and digital nomad. It was a leap of faith that allowed me to combine my passion for travel with my expertise in digital marketing, ultimately leading to the creation of The Creative Nomad PH.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced while transitioning to a digital nomad lifestyle, and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenges were adapting to constant change and maintaining a work-life balance. Traveling solo while managing multiple projects required a new level of discipline and organization. I overcame these challenges by developing routines that kept me grounded, no matter where I was. Prioritizing mental and emotional well-being, as well as embracing the uncertainty of the digital nomad lifestyle, helped me stay focused and resilient.

How do you balance your various roles as a freelancer, mentor, and creative individual?

Balancing these roles requires a blend of time management and self-care. I set clear boundaries for each role, dedicating specific hours to client work, mentoring sessions, and creative pursuits. Delegating tasks to my interns has also been crucial in ensuring that I can focus on the bigger picture. I also take time to recharge and draw inspiration from my surroundings helps me maintain this balance and keep the creative energy flowing. Going on cafes, beaches, other places allow me to think better, especially during busy days.

What role does music play in your life and your brand, and how does it influence your work and personal well-being?

Before I discovered my career in freelancing, I had always been into music. Although I have been singing since I was a child, in terms of instruments I learned them mostly during my mid 20s and songwriting as well. Music is a constant companion in my life, serving as both a source of inspiration and a tool for relaxation. It influences my work by helping me get into the right mindset, whether I’m brainstorming ideas or winding down after a busy day. I produce my songs but also I love singing different languages. I don’t know but I find it easy and both challenging and fun.

How do you handle the mental and emotional aspects of freelancing and working remotely, especially while traveling solo?

Managing the mental and emotional aspects of freelancing requires a proactive approach to self-care. I stay connected with my support system through regular check-ins with family and friends, and I make it a point to explore new places and meet new people wherever I go. Mindfulness practices like music and journaling help me process my experiences and maintain a positive mindset. It’s also important to celebrate small wins and remind myself why I chose this path. There are better days but there are also bad days.

Can you describe a particularly challenging moment in your career and how it shaped your approach to work and life?

One of the most challenging moments was when I first transitioned from a stable career in corporate to the uncertainty of freelancing. The initial fear of the unknown and financial instability was overwhelming, but it pushed me to develop resilience and adaptability. This experience taught me to embrace change, trust in my abilities, and remain open to new opportunities. It also shaped my approach to mentoring, as I can now offer guidance from a place of experience and empathy.

What advice would you give to aspiring digital nomads and freelancers who are just starting out?

My advice is to start with a clear vision of what you want to achieve and be patient with yourself as you navigate this new lifestyle. Build a strong foundation by acquiring essential skills, setting up systems that work for you, and seeking out a supportive community. Don’t be afraid to take risks and step out of your comfort zone. Remember that setbacks are part of the journey, and each challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow.

How do you maintain your motivation and creativity while managing multiple projects and responsibilities?

Staying motivated and creative requires regular breaks to recharge and refocus. I make it a point to explore my surroundings, whether it’s a new city or a quiet café, to find inspiration. Working on projects that align with my passions also keeps me energized. Additionally, I set small, achievable goals to maintain momentum and celebrate progress along the way. Balancing work with personal hobbies, like music and travel, helps keep the creative spark alive.

What strategies do you use to stay connected with and support your clients and mentees from different parts of the world?

Communication is key to staying connected with clients and mentees. I use a variety of tools, like video calls, messaging apps, and project management platforms, to maintain regular contact. I also make an effort to understand their unique needs and cultural contexts, which helps build strong, trusting relationships. Being flexible with time zones and availability ensures that I can support them effectively, no matter where I am in the world. I also don’t like the idea of micro-managing when I started hiring interns – I have always told them that I want them to be proactive in approaching me with their ideas and I will support them or provide suggestions that way they exercise their leadership when they start working with clients.

How has mentoring others impacted your own personal growth and professional development?

Mentoring has been incredibly rewarding and has contributed to my personal growth in unexpected ways. Although 4 years ago I don’t have anyone I look up to or any mentor. I am grateful that today I was able to find a community and people who support me and my vision. It’s deepened my understanding of different perspectives and challenged me to continually improve my own skills. Seeing my mentees succeed and achieve their goals is a constant source of motivation and fulfillment. Professionally, mentoring has expanded my network and opened up new opportunities for collaboration and learning.

What are some common misconceptions about the digital nomad lifestyle, and how do you address them?

One common misconception is that the digital nomad lifestyle is all about luxury and leisure. While it can be incredibly rewarding, it also comes with its own set of challenges, such as isolation, inconsistent income, and the need for constant adaptability. I address these misconceptions by being transparent about the realities of this lifestyle and offering practical advice to those considering it. It’s important to understand that it requires hard work, discipline, and a willingness to embrace uncertainty.

How do you manage the ups and downs of freelancing and ensure you take care of your mental health?

Managing the ups and downs of freelancing requires a combination of self-awareness and self-care. I make it a priority to recognize when I’m feeling overwhelmed and take steps to address it, whether that means taking a break, reaching out to a friend, or simply changing my environment. Setting realistic expectations and celebrating small achievements helps maintain a positive outlook. Regular physical activity, mindfulness practices, and creative outlets like music also play a crucial role in maintaining my mental health.

Can you share a success story from your mentoring or freelancing that stands out as particularly rewarding?

One success story that stands out is helping a client who was struggling to establish their social media platforms because they didn’t have the right person to take care of it. Through my strategy and help in SM, we identified how to maximize the use of their social media platforms and drive sales to their business. My client’s success is my success too.

What message or piece of advice would you like to share with other women pursuing their passions and navigating their own career paths?

My advice to other women is to believe in your abilities and not be afraid to take bold steps toward your dreams. The path may not always be clear, and you might face obstacles along the way, but every challenge is an opportunity to grow stronger and more resilient. Surround yourself with supportive people, keep learning, and trust that your unique perspective and skills have value.
