In the journey of writing and publishing a book, few paths are as winding and inspiring as Krystal Sandoval’s. Her novel, SunnyDays, is not just a testament to her creative vision but also a reflection of her resilience through life’s many upheavals. From the spark of inspiration she received at a Steven Rowley book signing to the personal challenges of moving, loss, and change, Krystal’s story is a beacon of perseverance. In this interview, she shares the highs and lows of her writing journey, offering heartfelt advice to aspiring authors and glimpsing into her future projects. Her experience reminds us that even amidst the toughest trials, the pursuit of a dream can lead to something truly wonderful.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced while writing “SunnyDays”?
I think the biggest challenges were initially gaining the courage to start the novel. After going to Steven Rowley’s book signing in Pleasanton, in 2019, I promised myself that I’d start writing soon. He really inspired me! Also, this book took me about four years to complete, and I went through so many life changes within that span of time: moving across the country with a toddler, my grandma getting sick with Dementia, my marriage crumbling, my grandma and little Yorkshire Terrier passing away and going through a divorce. I put writing on hold for about a year, then picked it back up because I made a promise to myself. Life threw so many curveballs, but this goal was so important to me. I refused to give up on it.
What advice would you give to other women who aspire to write and publish their own books?
Although this is going to sound so simple— I’d tell other women to just start writing! Start somewhere. If it’s your goal to write a book, give it a chance. Sit down and let the words flow. Allow yourself to make mistakes and to not have all the answers. It’s a process. Don’t let fear hinder you!
The publishing part can be tricky. Do you want to self-publish? Get an agent? Publish the traditional way? This is a learning curve, especially if you’re going to self-publish. Do lots of research! Get intouch with other writers, ask questions!
Can you describe a particularly memorable or influential moment from your study abroad experience that made its way into “SunnyDays”?
This is such a good question. In the opening of my book the main character, Harriet, goes on a first date with a cute Parisian man, named Jay. When I was in Paris, I went on some dates, and it may have been the same spot Harriet and Jay go to—- Chez Prune in the 10th arrondissement. Ha!
How do you handle criticism and feedback on your work?
This is a tough question. I recently went through the beta reader process, and I was incredibly nervous. Other than my editor- no one has read through my entire novel. When you have poured your heart and soul into something- it can be SO scary to have people critique your work. But overall, it was a good experience for me. I’m so nervous for my book to come out in November, and having people rate and review it. It’s nerve-wracking, but I’m going to try and remind myself that everyone is entitled to their own opinion…. and this comes with the territory of being a writer.
What future projects or goals do you have in mind following the release of “SunnyDays”?
I know I have another romance novel in me- this next one will be set in New England (Rhode Island, most likely). I haven’t started, but I have some ideas swirling. So stay tuned!I will also be involved in a short story anthology with some fellow indie authors I met on a writing retreat. I will begin writing that in a few months which is so exciting! The short story will be set in Montana- that’s all the details I can give you.
Thank you so much! SunnyDays comes out November 5, 2024. Pre-orders open up in September/October. Follow my book instagram: @lolacolettebooks for more info!
