9 Outdoor Activities That Will Help You Unwind

We all have to deal with stressful situations on a daily basis. Regardless of whether you have upcoming exams, your boss is riding you, or your family is getting on your nerves, getting out of your house and engaging in outdoor activities can help you blow off steam and make you feel calmer and less anxious. Since summer is just around the corner, here is a list of activities you should definitely try out during these upcoming months.

1. Paddle Boarding

Believe it or not, paddle boarding has become the king of summer sports. It is perfect for all those outdoorsy adventurers who are scared of surfing but still want to have a fun time on the water. This relaxing activity is similar to canoeing, but you stand up, which naturally makes it more exciting. In case you haven’t tried this sport before, find a lake in your area that offers paddle board rentals and give it a try!

2. Swimming

Forget about getting your hair getting damaged by all the chlorine and go for a swim in a nearby river or lake. In case you want to make a day out of it, invite some friends, pack a picnic basket, and have a fun time in the sun.

3. Hiking

If your town is surrounded by breathtaking mountains or forests, you are probably familiar with hiking. This activity is great for everyone since you don’t need any equipment, just your ordinary sweatshirt and a backpack. With every step you take, you will feel calmer and more in touch with nature. So grab some snacks and drinks and hit the road.

4. Music Festival

Is there anything more fun than summer music festivals? Listening to great performers underneath the sky is always a good way to blow off steam and relax. Almost every town has at least one outdoor concert during the summer, so make sure you check events in your area.

5. Camping

After the movie Wild came out five years ago everyone suddenly wanted to be Reese Witherspoon and spend time hiking and camping in nature. Although you really don’t need to lose a toenail and walk around wearing sandals reinforced with duct tape, you could spend a weekend away from the city lights. Waking up to the sound of chirping birds and stepping out of your comfort zone might do you good, so turn off your phone, pack a tent and search for the best-hidden camping areas. In case you don’t want to hike for hours with a heavy tent in your backpack, try car camping. This way you won’t be forced to prioritize and you will be able to bring everything you need without the annoying back pain.

6. Traveling

You really don’t need to book a trip to the Bahamas and a five-star hotel to have a good time. (but if you can, good for you!). Traveling doesn’t need to cost you a fortune, especially if you just want to take a break from your everyday life and clear your head. Find a hidden gem in your area and explore it. Going someplace you’ve never been (even if it is just around the corner) will help you unwind and recharge your batteries.

7. Cycling

How do you get from point A to point B every day? If your answer includes the word “car”, then this type of activity might be perfect for you. If you don’t own a bike, rent or borrow one from a friend and spend the whole day on two wheels. The possibilities are endless! You can ride around the city, go to a nearby brunch spot, check out new places or just enjoy the cool breeze.

8. Visiting the Zoo

When was the last time you visited a zoo? It doesn’t matter if you go alone, with a friend or a partner, you will surely make new animal friends there. Keep in mind that many zoos offer special programming during the summer, so check the calendar of activities and see when it’s the best time to go. Regardless of whether you want to meet animals up close, simply chat with animal keepers or learn more on your favorite creatures, you will definitely have a great time.

9. Farmers’ Market

If you feel stressed and overwhelmed with everything that is going on in your life, put your phone on vibrate and spend a couple of hours checking out fresh, seasonal produce at your local farmers’ market. You will fill your basket with wholesome, healthy food and the stress will leave your body.

Regardless of whether you decide to hike, run, camp, swim, do yoga or juggle in your front yard, spending some time outside will have a positive effect on your mind, body, and soul and help you face the problems life throws your way a whole lot easier.
