IT’S TIME FOR PORN TO CHANGE

change

There are an infinite number of issues to address in this day and age, and an infinite number of ways to make a difference. But, hear me out. What if we looked at the subjects of gender norms, stereotypes, relationships, social constructs, self-love etc… through the lens of the adult film industry?

Porn is so easily accessible (thanks to the internet) and unfortunately it perpetuates stereotypes, unhealthy sexual habits and unrealistic expectations about sex. Furthermore, the pornography industry is dominated by “the male gaze”  (study up on that too) and men in general. How many times have you watched porn and felt empowered?

I believe many young adults have subconsciously formed skewed perceptions of sex based on what they see in adult films. Where does that leave us?

Meet Erika Lust
I stumble across this Ted Talk titled, It’s Time for Porn to Change, given by Erika Lust, an indie adult filmmaker. How on-brand is her last name btw?
“Porn isn’t just porn. It’s a discourse about sexuality, about masculinity, about femininity and the roles we play. Everywhere the role of women is under debate, except in the porn industry. We don’t need to get women out of porn, we need to get women into porn, BEHIND the camera.”

Erika’s mission is this:

“I pledge to create new waves in adult cinema.

I want to show all of the passion, intimacy, love and lust in sex, where the feminine viewpoint is vital, the aesthetic is a pleasure to all of the senses, and those seeking an alternative to mainstream porn can find a home.”

Women are making amazing careers (even in erotic cinema) by fighting for a voice in these crucial conversations. There is always a choice, there is always an alternative and if you can’t find one… make one.

You can also hear more of Erika’s story in the new Netflix Original Series, Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On. In the first episode, Women on Top, Erika talks about her most recent crowd-sourced project XConfessions, which has a cinematic value that even the most notorious directors can’t deny.
