TIPS AND TRICKS FOR A STRUGGLING BLOGGER

Hi beauty lovers, So, I took a selfie the other day, noticed all my blogging equipment in the background and thought, “I hope I can do this as a career.” It made me reminisce on the day I decided to publish my first YouTube video. Fast forward three years later and here we are! Still blogging strong… When you get off your parents teet and have bills and real shit to deal with, you start to live the life that’s there instead of living the life you love. I was getting frustrated and tired of doing all this work without reaping rewards. I was starting to forget the whole reason I began my blogging journey and started to focus on free makeup and paid ads. Yet, what I am failing to realize is that I am passionate about something! In life, we get so caught up in the mundane daily tasks and...

HOW TO BE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL YOU POSSIBLE

The road to success is long and filled with obstacles, but the end-goal and final destination never came to anyone without hardships and a whole lot of work. I was never the type of person to go along with life and let it steer me in the direction it wanted me to take me. I was the type of person who grabbed onto the wheel and drove down my own uncharted path, unwilling to simply be mediocre or “just okay” at anything that I did. Here’s how you can do the same thing: Don’t Slack I get it – school is hard, work is hard, everything is hard. Nothing in life is easy, and you learn that pretty quickly. You know the saying “dress for the job you want, not the job you have”? The same concept should apply to every facet of your life. Getting by and doing the bare minimum may seem like a good idea ...

LETTING GO: OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE… OLD?

The past few years have been, at times, challenging, but overall, were rewarding. I am finding who I want to be, and who I am from within is finally reflecting on the outside. I now have purpose, direction, and self-determination. Many of my dreams and visions of my future are coming to clarity, and this is primarily due to changing thought processes and patterns of behavior. This past year especially, I have learned to de-clutter, both around my home and within myself. I have let go of some past pattern of behaviors, changed my eating habits slightly, and exercised more. I cleaned out the closets in my home and donated a lot of clothes to Goodwill. I began journaling, too, about my thoughts and memories. Writing down memories that affect me in some way, and how I felt at that point in tim...

THIS IS 30.

“Don’t tell me our youth is running out It’s only just begun.” – Foxes “OMG, you’re turning 30… how do you feel about that?” I’m asked as though the moment I go from age 29 to age 30 that I’ll magically be transported into some state of infinite wisdom that I can bestow upon my younger friends. Or way less glamorous than that: I’ll be in complete and utter devastation. I’m not sure if it’s just me, but turning 30 has been oddly unceremonious. This could be due to the fact that, as I keep telling you guys, I feel like I’m still 17, and this denial tactic has served me perfectly well throughout my 20s. But the truth is that in my experience, there has been no grandiose moment. No marching band, no confetti falling from the sky. Just another day, a mild hangover and slight back pain. To...

BOWL OF LIGHT

Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light.                                         -Albus Dumbledore   If you are anything like me, you are a predominately positive person (wow, so many p’s!). You love to laugh, you roll the windows down on summer days, you sing at the top of your lungs. You would be the first person to pick your friend up if she was feeling down. But, you are also human. And, if you are anything like me there are days when you find yourself stuck in a cycle of negative thoughts. Maybe something went wrong at work or you had a fight with a family member. Maybe nothing necessarily happened to cause this pattern of thinking but it seems impossible to make your way out of the downward spiral. First, let ...

THE WOMAN I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD BE

It was a few hours past midnight and I couldn’t find anything open around the area where I parked my car – which was also my bed at that moment – so I went outside to find some place to hide for me to take a leak. Maybe it was the combination of the cold autumn night and not having anything to eat on that day, but I never felt so exposed to the outside world like that in all my life. I felt so bare, unprotected, and, the saddest thing is, so alone. Have you ever felt like your world as you know it went and crumbled to the ground in just a matter of seconds? Imagine everything you have, everything you worked so hard for, everything that is important to you – your whole world – taken away from you. I remember crying inside the car until the tears couldn’t ...

YOU ARE YOU

It’s hard to find your voice as a woman. We are told to be dainty. Told to be soft. What if we are none of those things? If we are not what the world wants us to be, then what are we? The answer is simple. We are us. We are ourselves. I have chosen to take on the battle, to challenge these old-time beliefs of women. I am currently working on a series of cliché and grotesque self-portraits using digital media. I replicated famous artists and art pieces, such as Andy Warhol and his Marilyn Monroe. I also take my own photos of myself and shape myself into monstrous creatures. I do this to show my hate for the standards we are held to and the beauty expectations that are forced upon us. The series is for a project in my college, Kentucky College of Art and Design, or KYCAD. My teacher, Kenyatt...

REALIZING THAT HE ISN’T THE ONE (& LIKING IT)

He saved me. I hate to say it but he really did. For over a year I had be swimming around in confusion and putting my interests on anyone who would give me attention but never for long enough for me to care about them. I balanced on a wall leaning down to give time to anyone who asked for it but never jumped down into their arms because that would mean I might break. Then he came and I jumped off that wall faster than I could have ever fallen. I dove right into him and soaked myself in his love for months. It lifted me up and protected me. He took the time to know me and love every part of my aching soul. I was completely his and yet still free to live as I wanted. He helped me grow and he watered my roots every single day. We were unbreakable and ready to be together for the rest of our l...

THE BALANCING ACT OF AN ENTREPRENEUR

I asked myself this question EVERYDAY before beginning my entrepreneur journey: How can I successfully balance my already chaotic life with being an active, engaged, hands-on entrepreneur? I set aside time for a serious brainstorming session and one key word continued to swarm my mind: ORGANIZATION. In order for one to become organized, you have to start somewhere and usually it’s when everything is ALREADY in complete disarray. Terrible right? Not exactly! Sometimes being in the midst of the “storm” creates a burning desire to find a solution to the problem. This creates a situation where you are almost forced to make a decision. Now is it wise to wait until it gets to this point? No, but it is never too late to START. Just start why don’t you! So this brings me to my first point: 1...

SELF AWARENESS

Sunday scaries meet holiday scaries! You’re here. Right smack in the middle of the holiday craziness. You might be post Christmas, mid Chanukah and pre New Years Eve and let’s be honest there is just A LOT going on.  Maybe you’re feeling post holiday blues and the ever pending new year anxiety already kicking in. Well, Harness babes.  I want to remind you that to it’s okay to feel all of the things you are feeling at this current moment. If you’re overwhelmed, anxious, grateful, stressed, lost, happy, sad (insert any emotion you may be feeling at this very second) that is OK!  So often we are taught to repress how we feel and just power through. That we, as women, are weak if we are too emotional, or feel things too strongly. That we are bragging if we boast about how happy we are. However...

ADVICE FROM A RECRUITER: 3 TIPS TO MAKE A GREAT IMPRESSION IN A JOB INTERVIEW

It is said that these days, the average employee will have anywhere from three to five different careers before they retire. This is a far cry from our parents’ generation where you stayed at one company and left with a gold watch when you retired. While our parents’ advice is genuine and well-intentioned, it is not always adapted to our current reality. One thing is for sure: no matter what you want to do, having strong interviewing skills will serve you well. They can give you the possibility to seize an opportunity if you are headhunted on LinkedIn or the flexibility to leave a company if you find yourself stagnating. Who am I to be telling you this? I was a recruiter for the past 10 years. I began my career at an agency then transitioned onto corporate Human Resources where...

DEVELOPING THIS ONE SKILL GOT ME OUT OF THE PROJECTS AND MADE ME A DESIGNERLEBRITY™

Before I explain what designerlebrity is, I love it when I have to explain where I came from. You see people have a hard time believing I was born and raised in one of the most volatile public housing projects in Brooklyn. In fact, Marcy Projects was made famous by the notorious rapper and business mogul, Jay Z aka, Beyoncé’s husband, also aka, Shawn Carter as I knew him instead of just being my neighbor. Marcy was an unique environment that taught you things and forced you to develop certain skills at a very young age. Not to repeat what Jay Z may have said on Oprah’s Master Class, but Marcy did teach us how to survive. It instilled in us toughness and the values of integrity, honesty and even an unwavering sense of paranoia. As insane as it may sound, it was a brilliant upbringing that h...
