HOMEBODY

This project was inspired by “home.” We wanted to embody high fashion with a homey / even a neighborhood type of feel. We shot various looks with the lovely Evie Williams with Click – Re:Quest Models NYC. One of my favorite looks was Evie modeling her Onepiece raincoat. It was just such a staple piece for this shoot. I always try to capture the realness / rawness of the project + of the person. Those candid + natural moments are the best of moments! TIPS AND TRICKS FOR A STRUGGLING BLOGGER

Hi beauty lovers, So, I took a selfie the other day, noticed all my blogging equipment in the background and thought, “I hope I can do this as a career.” It made me reminisce on the day I decided to publish my first YouTube video. Fast forward three years later and here we are! Still blogging strong… When you get off your parents teet and have bills and real shit to deal with, you start to live the life that’s there instead of living the life you love. I was getting frustrated and tired of doing all this work without reaping rewards. I was starting to forget the whole reason I began my blogging journey and started to focus on free makeup and paid ads. Yet, what I am failing to realize is that I am passionate about something! In life, we get so caught up in the mundane daily tasks and...

TO THE TALL GIRL

Dear sister, stretch your neck. Not to the side. Upward. Crane it. If you look like a giraffe it’s because you are one. Because you reach higher branches. Because you overflow the space you’ve been allotted. Because your shoulders are temples to the birds. Because you already possess the sky.   Do not slouch in pictures. Do not notice the gap between his head and yours unless it is to see if you can pick something off the top shelf for him. Do not wish for less perspective. Do not be afraid of your own significance. You have the magnetism of a lighthouse. The musculature of a waterfall. The elevation of volcanic rock. The voice of a bugle calling forth from a tower. So sing our rally song. HOW TO FIND THE “TRUE YOU” IN THE MIRROR

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Lines you swear weren’t there the day before and tiny grays rupturing through your scalp? Lips that aren’t quite full enough and patches of skin that stick out to you? Pimples or birthmarks or moles that detract from your perfect palette? Eyes that are too narrow or too wide or too squinted or too basic? Do you see unruly eyebrows or over-plucked ones or ones that are clearly the wrong shape? A nose that’s too squashed or too full or with too large of pores? When you look in the mirror, do you see thick arms that jiggle too much and lumps and bumps you wish you could cover? Do you see pouches and wrinkles and marks you wish you could vaporize? Do you see a stomach that will never be a six-pack and legs that are just too flabby? Breasts t...

LESSONS FROM VICTORIA BECKHAM’S LETTER TO HER 18-YEAR-OLD SELF

Talk to yourself as you would your best friend. This type of self-compassion advice is quite common these days. And I agree this helps. But what about talking to yourself like you would as the older version of you – the wiser, more experienced woman that you will inevitably become?   Caption: Source: Vogue Magazine   This idea became top of mind for me recently after reading a letter that Victoria Beckham wrote to her 18-year-old self. You can see the letter in the latest issue of Vogue. The letter was quite eye-opening and Victoria exposed many details about her personal insecurities (even admitting to getting breast implants). I found these confessions surprising, as Victoria’s public image exudes confidence. She IS Posh Spice, after all. You don’t fall into a name like t...

AND GOD CREATED MANOLOS

I’ve always been unconventionally stylish. In sixth grade I bought a fancier pajama shirt and wore it to school like it was the hottest item from the Paris runway. But, my love of fashion is often unapparent to those around me, simply because I am and have always been extremely studious. As a business student, I have a theory that most people who meet me think I’m going to become an accountant and then die from cardiac arrest. My passions, however, cannot be expressed from behind a desk at Ernest and Young. That being said, I’m embarrassed to admit that I like fashion. Last summer I was working as a receptionist when a co-worker asked me about my blog. She questioned in a rather condescending tone if blogging is something that I do for fun or if I actually want to work in fashion. I immedi...

IS ALICIA KEYS THE FACE OF THE #NOMAKEUP MOVEMENT

I’ll be the first to admit that when Alicia Keys’ ever-important ode to emotional flip-flopping, “Fallin’” came out in 2001, my eight-year old self wanted to pick up a keyboard and have my momma add some beads to my hair immediately. Like any musical artist, and especially black musical artists, reinvention is necessary to keep audiences interested and albums relevant. So when Keys hit us with her single “In Common,” and it’s beautiful black and white visuals, many of us were all here for it, but what got most people talking is Keys’ new au naturale vibe via headwrap and bare face. What seems to have followed in the weeks since the video’s release has been less praise over the actual song and more praise over the fact that Keys graced us with her real “I woke up like this,” self, sparking ...

I AM BEAUTIFUL

Why bother telling me that I’m beautiful, I’m just going to deny it. I look in the mirror and see nothing that you see. What is this beauty that you speak of? I definitely do not have it. You see, my nose is too big and my face is full of scars from the past. How in any way is that beautiful? Don’t come around here with your mouth full of lies. Your deceitful smile and those marvelous eyes. I can’t seem to grasp the fact about any of this. Are you blind? Are you daft? Are you stupid? No words can describe how confused that I am. I sit there for a moment. Then ask, “how, in any way could you think that someone who looks like me could even be considered beautiful?” You chuckle, and softly say, “Beauty isn’t a definition, it isn’t the cover of a vogue magazine. Beauty is something you c...
